Licenses & source

Spiel is proprietary software, but it ships alongside open-source components. Some of those are copyleft-licensed, which means anyone we hand a binary to is entitled to their source. This page is where you get it.

Source for copyleft components

The Mac, Linux and Windows server downloads bundle unmodified prebuilt ffmpeg binaries. Spiel runs ffmpeg as a separate program rather than linking it, so the two remain separate works — but the ffmpeg binaries themselves are GPL, and the corresponding source is below. Versions matter: the GPL asks for the source matching the binary you received, not just the project's latest.

FFmpeg 7.1 GPL-2.0-or-later
Bundled with the macOS server (Spiel-Server.dmg). Built with --enable-gpl.
FFmpeg 7.0.2 GPL-3.0-or-later
Bundled with the Linux servers (x86-64 and ARM64). Static build, --enable-gpl --enable-version3.
x264 GPL-2.0-or-later
Statically linked into the ffmpeg builds above.
x265 GPL-2.0-or-later
Statically linked into the ffmpeg builds above.
VLCKit / libVLC LGPL-2.1-or-later
Decodes formats browsers can't, in the iPhone and Apple TV apps. Used as an unmodified dynamic framework, so it can be replaced or relinked.
AMSMB2 / libsmb2 LGPL-2.1-or-later
Reads media directly from SMB shares.

If a link stops resolving, write to support@spielplayer.com and we'll send the corresponding source for the exact build you have.
